Frequently Asked Periodontal Questions – Mount Prospect, IL

Get the Answers You’re Looking For

Do you have questions about gum disease, dental implants, or any other services our team at EPIC PERIODONTICS & IMPLANT CENTER offers? Below, we’ve compiled a list of commonly asked questions we receive from our patients, along with our answers. If you still don’t see what you’re looking for, don’t hesitate to reach out to our team directly. We’re always happy to help!

Gum disease symptoms can range drastically depending on how long the condition has gone untreated. Some early signs include:

Bleeding while brushing or flossing
Chronic bad breath
Swollen or puffy gums
Dark red gums
Some later signs of the disease, also referred to as periodontitis, include:

Gum recession (where the gums shrink and make teeth appear longer)
Pain while chewing
Changes in the bite
Loose teeth
Sensitivity
Tooth loss

When gum disease is caught and addressed in its early stages, known as gingivitis, the effects can be reversed with good at-home oral hygiene and targeted treatments. However, when it advances to periodontitis, it cannot be reversed, just managed to prevent worsening symptoms like tooth loss.

Dr. Khan is a periodontist, which means she has received specialized training that makes her highly qualified when it comes to placing and restoring dental implants. Not only does she utilize the latest technology that makes treatments more precise, like a cone beam CT scanner, but she also has three additional years of training after dental school, where she specialized in hard and soft tissue treatments. In addition to all of this, Dr. Khan has over 17 years of experience.

While your dental insurance may not cover the complete cost of your dental implant treatment, they may apply your benefits to portions of it, like preparatory treatments that may be necessary, and the crafting of the prosthetics. Our team will help you navigate your coverage and submit any claims on your behalf to maximize your benefits and minimize out-of-pocket expenses.

The primary difference between a general or family dentist and a periodontist is their training and education. Both are required to attend dental school, but in order for periodontists to become experts in soft and hard tissue treatments, like gum disease therapy and dental implants, they must attend an addition two to three year residency following dental school.

During this post-graduate experience, they receive extensive hands-on training and knowledge in non-surgical and surgical procedures involving the gums, dental implant placement, and periodontal (gum disease) treatment.

This answer can be complicated, especially if Dr. Khan hasn’t had a chance to examine your mouth yet. If you have the early stages of gum disease, called gingivitis, our team can work with you to reverse the condition and restore the health of your gums, allowing them to potentially support dental implants in the future. However, if you have advanced periodontitis, you may be a better candidate for traditional dentures or dental bridges since they don’t require being anchored into your gum line.
